Welcome to The Broken Typewriter
The goal of this digital publication is to blend the best features of a community newspaper, with the longer news format of a news magazine. Having worked for both types of publications, I think I'm close to achieving that goal.
So, if you're tired of reading nothing but regurgitated press releases, and want to see coverage of events going on in the BC North Peace, The Broken Typewriter is the news outlet for you.
Do you wish someone would ask the questions you want to know the answers to, about things relevant to the BC North Peace? From someone who truly has a vested interest in North Peace? The Broken Typewriter aims to do just that - to report what’s happening in our community, but go one step further and ask those important questions. I can’t promise to get the answers, but I’m going to ask.
The Broken Typewriter is created by Tania Finch. Although I use a variety of sources for the stories you'll find here, every word is written by me, not a wire service or reposted from other publications. The photographs used are also mine, unless otherwise stated. In addition, The Broken Typewriter is the only truly independent news outlet in the North Peace - I don't receive any funds whatsoever from any government, not wage subsidies, nor grants, nor bailouts.
There's a saying, Once you drink from the waters of the Mighty Peace, it will always call you back. I'm not sure who first said that, but it's proved true for me. Since I moved to Fort St. John in 1981, no matter where in the world I've been, I returned to the Peace. Following university, I came back and eventually landed a job as a staff reporter & photographer at The Northerner. Followed by a few years as a freelance reporter with the Alaska Highway News, before returning to The Northerner as Editor. After that, it was back to freelancing. During that time I wrote about industry, business and agriculture in the BC Peace for Oilweek Magazine, Northwest Business Magazine, The Peace Country Farmer, Oil & Gas Inquirer, and The Patch Review. More recently, I have done freelance work for Energeticcity.ca when they were short-staffed. No matter the publication, my work has always been focussed on the North Peace.
Throughout my career in the news, I've enjoyed being able to bring community news to my fellow Peace Region residents. There is always something newsworthy going on, whether it's in agriculture, industry, municipal politics, education, culture or business. These are the things the people of our community are involved in, the things that shape our lives and make the North Peace region what it is.
I hope to bring that to you, the people of the BC North Peace, in a clear and honest fashion. There're always two sides to every story, and I will try my best to present those to you.
